Bollywood 10 movies that have changed the Minds of the Public

The world of cinema is full of surprises and Bollywood has a knack for exceeding our expectations. Often, stumbling upon a movie with no prior expectations can result in being completely blown away by its excellence. This experience can be a refreshing change from the overhyped A-list movies that often fail to deliver on their promises. To celebrate the unsung heroes of Bollywood that deserve more recognition, a list has been compiled of such movies that made audiences sit up and take notice. These gems are the unexpected delights that have made a lasting impact on moviegoers.

Qarib Qarib Singlle

Qarib Qarib Singlle: A Refreshingly Mature Love Story Starring Irrfan and Parvathy"

In "Qarib Qarib Singlle," director Tanuja Chandra makes a comeback after nine years with a heartwarming tale of two adults who embark on a journey of self-discovery. The movie follows Jaya (played by Parvathy), a work-obsessed widow in her mid-30s, who lacks confidence in her personal life despite excelling at work. Through a dating website called Ab Tak Single, she meets Yogi (played by Irrfan), a confident and spontaneous man who lives in the moment.

The movie takes the audience on a journey from Mumbai to Dehradun, Roorkee, Jaipur, and Gangtok, showcasing the scenic beauty of these places. Despite the luxurious train journey and road trip to Gangtok, the focus remains on the personal journeys of the lead characters.

Both Jaya and Yogi come with baggage from their pasts, but while Yogi is open to new relationships, Jaya is hesitant. The movie primarily focuses on Jaya's character, offering little explanation for Yogi's background or wealth, but the charm and maturity of their love story make these details less significant.

The interactions between the lead couple are portrayed in a novel and realistic way, devoid of typical Bollywood cliches. The film's songs, with Atif Aslam's "Jaane De" and "Khatam Kahani" standing out, add to the mood and flow of the narrative.

Irrfan's character wins over the audience's hearts with his charm, eventually winning over Jaya herself, despite her initial annoyance. Parvathy, making her Bollywood debut, is the perfect choice for the role of a self-reliant woman battling her past ghosts with both confidence and vulnerability.

Thursday

A Thursday is a movie that continues the story of A Wednesday!, a 2008 sleeper hit by Neeraj Pandey. Both movies are produced by Ronnie Screwvala and feature a vigilante creating a hostage situation for a righteous cause.

The movie stars Yami Gautam as Naina, a playschool teacher in Mumbai who takes little kids hostage, demanding ₹5 crore and a tête-à-tête with the Prime Minister. The cops on the case are Catherine Alvarez (Neha Dhupia) and her deputy Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni).

The movie has some positives, like the tense atmosphere created by the premise itself, but also some negatives, like the overdramatic acting by Kulkarni, weak writing, and a hard-to-believe Prime Minister character played by Dimple Kapadia. The movie's dialogue is also not very impressive, considering the writer is Vijay Maurya, who wrote the beautiful Bambaiya Hindi lines for Gully Boy.

Overall, the movie is a serviceable vigilante movie that has some interesting moments but also some weak parts in the writing and acting.

Runway 34

"Runway 34" is an exciting aviation drama directed by Ajay Devgn and starring himself, Amitabh Bachchan, and Rakul Preet Singh. Inspired by true events, the film tells the story of Captain Vikrant Khanna (Ajay Devgn) and first officer Tanya Albuquerque (Rakul Preet Singh), who face an investigation and interrogation by Narayan Vedant (Amitabh Bachchan) after making a May Day call before landing an aircraft in turbulent conditions, risking the lives of 150 passengers.

The film is a thrilling, fast-paced experience with spectacular visual effects, impressive camera work, and skillful direction by Ajay Devgn. The story is crisp and well-narrated, keeping the audience engaged throughout the film's runtime of around two hours and 30 minutes. The in-flight scenes are captured well, depicting the tension in the cockpit and the challenges faced by the pilots during the crisis.

Ajay Devgn's performance as both an actor and director is commendable. He creates an immersive experience, focusing on the story and the thrill of the aviation drama without unnecessary romantic angles or emotional outbursts. Rakul Preet Singh is convincing as a young pilot, although her character could have been more fleshed out. Amitabh Bachchan is strong and stern as the investigating officer, and the supporting cast, including Boman Irani, Angira Dhar, and Aakansha Singh, do well in their smaller roles.

"Runway 34" is an engrossing cinematic experience that keeps you on the edge of your seat, depicting the challenges and risks involved in aviation dramas. It's a must-watch for fans of the genre and delivers a thrilling big screen experience.

Lost

Lost is a recent film that I watched, and while it had a promising start, it ended up being disappointing. The director, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, tried to touch upon several important issues, but the execution fell short.

The story is set in Kolkata and follows Vidhi Sahani (played by Yami Gautam), a crime reporter who is investigating the sudden disappearance of a young theatre activist named Ishaan Bharti (Tushar Pandey). Vidhi discovers the involvement of a girl named Ankita Chauhan (Pia Bajpiee), who is now working for a political leader named Ranjan Varman (Rahul Khanna) and vying for an MLA seat. The first half of the film is engaging and keeps the audience intrigued, but the second half loses momentum.

One of the main issues with Lost is that it tries to tackle too many topics, such as gender bias, patriarchy, corruption, marriage woes, and naxal terror, but fails to delve deep into any of them. The social issues are only touched upon on the surface and lack impact. There are scenes that attempt to highlight these issues, such as Vidhi's parents calling crime journalism a "man's field," but they do not leave a lasting impression.

Lost OTT Platform

Zee 5 - https://www.zee5.com/movies/details/lost/0-0-1z5299828

Despite the flaws in the script, some performances stand out. Yami Gautam delivers a fine performance as a crime reporter, portraying her character with control and authenticity. Rahul Khanna shines as the suave politician, displaying both charm and a strong grip on his character. Pankaj Kapur is a treat to watch onscreen, delivering impactful lines and providing emotional depth to the film. However, other characters, such as Ankita played by Pia Bajpiee, lack depth and development. Neil Bhoopalam's character feels forgettable and adds little to the narrative.

Lost may be worth watching for Yami Gautam's performance, but overall, it falls short in delivering a compelling story with a satisfying climax. The film tries to cover too many issues without fully exploring them, leaving the audience with unanswered questions and a feeling of disappointment.

Dasvi

The movie Dasvi is about a corrupt chief minister named Ganga Ram Chaudhary, played by Abhishek Bachchan, who is sent to jail for his crimes. While he is imprisoned, his wife, played by Nimrat Kaur, takes over his position and becomes addicted to the power it brings. Meanwhile, a new superintendent, played by Yami Gautam, is appointed to the jail and clashes with Ganga. After being called illiterate, Ganga takes up the challenge of completing his Class 10 exam in order to prove himself.

Although the movie tries to send a strong message about the importance of education, it falls short due to inconsistent storytelling and weak writing. The first half of the movie is entertaining and full of socio-political satire, but the second half becomes preachy and dragged out. The characters are also poorly developed and given a caricaturish look, making it hard to believe in their actions.

Dasvi OTT Platform

Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/in/title/81332225?source=35

Abhishek Bachchan impressively portrays the chief minister, but the character is limited by stereotypes and lacks depth. Nimrat Kaur shines as the housewife-turned-politician, and Yami Gautam delivers a strong performance as the new superintendent. However, the chemistry between Abhishek and Nimrat's characters feels superficial and underdeveloped.

Overall, Dasvi had a strong subject but failed to execute it effectively. The movie is available on Netflix.

Badla

Badla" is an official remake of a Spanish film called "The Invisible Guests" by Oriol Paulo. The film has made very few changes to the original story, except for switching the genders of the main characters and making some references to the Mahabharata, specifically the ideas of revenge and forgiveness. The film is set in Glasgow, abroad, due to demands of the scene of crime which may not have been easily met in India.

The story revolves around a top defense lawyer, Badal Gupta (played by Amitabh Bachchan), who is hired by a successful businesswoman, Naina Sethi (played by Taapsee Pannu), to defend her against the charge of murdering her lover, Arjun (played by Tony Luke). As the story progresses, you may start to suspect that something is amiss from the very beginning, as there are bits and pieces of the larger set-up that don't quite add up and predictable twists and turns.

Badla OTT platform

Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/in/title/81112446?source=35

The big reveal in the film is disappointing and implausible, and the chain of events is hard to believe in, leaving you with many questions. However, the cat-and-mouse game between Bachchan and Pannu, their actions, reactions, and mind games keep you engaged, as they discuss truth, lies, and multiple perspectives on the same crime. The film plays with the idea of perception, questioning what you see and what may actually be happening, and who is manipulating whom.

Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu deliver strong performances, and Amrita Singh stands out and steals the show. Other actors have minor roles in the film. Overall, the film may keep you engaged if you don't overthink the logic and enjoy the mind games between the characters

Goodbye

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Rashmika Mandanna, Neena Gupta, Pavail Gulati, Sahil Mehra, Elli AvrRam

Director: Vikas Bahl

The matriarch of the Bhalla family, Gayatri Bhalla (Neena Gupta), suddenly passes away, and her family, including her husband Harish Bhalla (Amitabh Bachchan), gather at the cremation ground to bid her farewell. Meanwhile, Gayatri's neighborhood ladies are busy creating a WhatsApp group in her memory, and after some deliberation, they name it 'Chandigarh Bubblies', as Gayatri used to call them that. However, as the story of Goodbye unfolds, it becomes clear that it is a confused tale that struggles to find its focus beyond the funeral.

The first half of the film leaves the audience puzzled, as it tries to tackle various themes, such as a dysfunctional family dealing with grief, a rebellious daughter challenging traditions, four siblings coming together to say their last goodbyes, and a conflict between faith and science. However, the film fails to tie these themes together effectively, and the humor injected into the story often comes across as forced and inappropriate, given the sensitive nature of the subject matter.

The Bhalla children, Tara (Rashmika Mandanna), Karan (Pavail Gulati), Angad (Sahil Mehra), and Nakul (Abhishekh Khan), return home from different parts of the world for their mother's funeral. Tara, a lawyer, feels guilty for not responding to her mother's last call. Karan, a workaholic, can't part with his laptop and ear pods even as he grieves. Angad, Gayatri's favorite, indulges in party food despite his father's disapproval. Nakul, who is on a trekking expedition, learns about his mother's death later than the rest of the family.

GoodBye OTT Platform

Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/in/title/81509545

Amidst the family's mourning, Harish, his Labrador named 'Stupid', and their house help are preoccupied with the funeral arrangements. Goodbye attempts to blend comedy and drama, but the humor often falls flat and feels misplaced, detracting from the emotional impact of the film. For example, Harish blindly follows his friend's instructions, leading to comical situations involving Gayatri's body that come across as tasteless.

While there are emotionally moving scenes in the film, the screenplay fails to sustain the emotional depth for long, due to the misplaced humor. Amitabh Bachchan delivers a sincere and convincing performance, portraying Harish's emotions effectively. Rashmika Mandanna makes her Hindi debut with a decent performance, although her expressions could have been better. Pavail Gulati, Sahil Mehra, and Elli AvrRam are good in their respective roles and make the most of their screen time. Neena Gupta shines in flashback sequences, and her chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan is endearing. Sunil Grover's portrayal of the priest injects some interest into the film's slow first half.

In conclusion, Goodbye is a film that tries to explore multiple themes but fails to tie them together cohesively. The humor feels forced and inappropriate at times, and while there are some emotionally moving scenes, the screenplay doesn't sustain the emotional impact consistently. Amitabh Bachchan's performance is a highlight of the film, but overall, Goodbye falls short of leaving a lasting impression.

Sharmaji Namkeen

Sharmaji Namkeen is a movie that marks a first in Indian cinema, as two actors - Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal - play the same character. This film is particularly special because it is Rishi Kapoor's last onscreen appearance before his passing. Sharmaji Namkeen is a simple and sweet slice-of-life story directed by Hitesh Bhatia that portrays the life of Brij Gopal Sharma (played by Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal), a retired manager of Madhuban Appliances who is unable to sit idle at home.

As Sharmaji explores his passion for cooking, he is tricked into cooking at a ladies' kitty party by his friend Chaddha, played by Satish Kaushik. This turns into a regular affair, and soon, his circle of friends sees quite a change. In the process, he finds a friend and confidante in Veena, played by Juhi Chawla. However, when Sharmaji's sons, neighbours, and relatives find out about his secret job, the story takes a turn.

Sharmaji Namkeen is not a film that preaches about how retirees should live their lives. It is a movie that captures the dilemma that retirees face but never evokes a feeling of pity. The film is filled with several lighter moments and comic punches that are excellently executed by Kapoor and Rawal. The two veterans deliver a seamless performance staying true to the one common character they portray. The scenes featuring Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla are endearing and take you back to Bol Radha Bol days when the two were a hit onscreen pair. The chemistry between them is charming, and one wishes that the makers had developed that track further.
